This past Monday we went to the Children's Hospital for a follow up appointment to keep track of Lincoln's eye. Our Last visit I me tioned how I was handed a piece of paper with a highlighted diagnosis #ptosis and was told to research, then was told to come back in two months. Well sadly, this appointment didn't go to much better in the department of a conversation. His doctor checked his vision and checked to make sure his droopy lid hadn't worsened. Then stated no surgery this time, come back in six months.
Now yes, the no surgery part was great, but that's it. No conversation whatsoever on the research I had done, when I brought it up, or mention of future possibilities. I got a smile, and no surgery today, back in six months. I've joined a few ptosis groups and forums, asked questions, read articles, and have found more on my phone that what this specialist can provide. I've learned that their are two possible surgeries. One that pulls and shortens the muscle in the eye lid. Then there is a sling method where theeye brow has a sling place using the brow to left the lid. Either surgery yes is pretty minor as far as surgeries go, but easier done at an earlier age the better. I also found out that the procedure is done awake, and takes several months to really heal from. Either surgery the eye lid will take several months to completely close,so eye drops will be needed to keep the eye from drying out, or the eye may never completely close depending on how much the muscle is shortened. Then there is the possibility of the procedure failing and having repeat surgeries. Now have the procedure at a young agea may need repeating around the age of 7 because the eyes stop growing and the surgery would be to cosmetically match the eyes. Anything done before them isn't to match but so the eye can continue to develop without causi g the eye to not work properly. Again this is all research I've done. His doctor couldn't be bothered to fill us in anymore than that. My daughter and Lincoln have an appointment with their pediatrician towards the end of the month for 9 month shots and a wellness check up. I'm pretty sure I'm going to see about switching specialist, o e that will be more willing to communicate more information. Don't get me wrong if nothing is needed right now great, but I'd love to know what the future may hold and what to look forward to.
After the appointment I let the kids all run around and play in the Children's Hospital play zone before heading to spending time with my mom and vent about the lack of information being communicated.
